Practical business support for tradies across Australia

Everyone Says You Need a Website.
But Why?

If you've been in business for a while, you've definitely had someone tell you that you need a website if you don't already.

The funny thing is, very few tradies understand what a website is actually supposed to do. What value it brings and why it’s an important part of the bigger picture of your business.

I've heard stories from tradies who've spent thousands on a website and got nothing from it. I've also seen fairly simple websites bring in steady enquiries because they answered the right questions, built trust and made it easy for customers to get in touch.

That trust part matters. Before someone lets you into their home, hands over money, or books you for a job, they want to feel comfortable. They want to know you’re a real business, that you do the work you say you do, and that other people have had a good experience with you.

Most customers don't contact a business the first time they hear about it. A mate might recommend you. They might find you on Google. Someone might see your Facebook page after another local has shared your name.

Before they make contact, they’ll usually do a bit of digging to see if you’re the real deal. Think about the last time you needed a service yourself. Chances are you checked a few reviews, looked at some photos and had a quick look at the website before deciding who to contact.

Customers are looking for photos, reviews, services, service areas and some idea of what happens next. A website helps answer those questions while you’re busy on the tools.

That’s also why a website works well alongside your Google Business Profile. Google helps people find you. Your website helps them decide whether to contact you. Social media plays a part too, but posts disappear pretty quickly. Your website gives customers one place they can visit any time to learn more about your business and get in touch.

A website isn't something you build once and forget about. Businesses change. Services change. Customers change. I've seen websites with disconnected phone numbers, old addresses, outdated services, broken links and enquiry forms that nobody realised had stopped working months ago.

Regular checks, small updates and understanding how customers are using the site can uncover opportunities that could otherwise be missed. Sometimes it's not about rebuilding your whole website. It's about fixing the little things that are potentially stopping customers from finding you, contacting you or taking the next step.

A website won't magically make the phone ring, and plenty of tradies have spent money on websites that never delivered results. The businesses that get the most value from their website are usually the ones that keep it simple. Clear information, real photos, easy ways to get in touch and answers to the questions customers are already asking.

Once somebody reaches out, the website has done its job. That’s where the rest of your business systems take over, but none of that happens if the customer doesn’t feel confident enough to contact you in the first place.
